23 Feb 2026

Pure adrenalin, thrilling races, history made: This was Short Track at the Track at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026. The Milano Ice Arena was the home of the fast and the furious for six days of competition, filled with everything you expect from Short Track.

The Netherlands reigned supreme with seven medals: five gold, one silver and one bronze. Flying Dutchman and new Short Track hero Jens van ‘T Wout raced to two individual gold in the 1000m and 1500m and led the Men’s Relay to their first Olympic title. He also captured bronze in the 500m, sharing the podium with his brother Melle, who got silver over this distance. The brothers are the first siblings to stand on an Olympic Short Track podium together in an individual event.

Xandra Velzeboer added two gold in the Women’s 500m and 1000m to the medal tally.

Xandra Velzeboer set a new World and Olympic record in the Women’s 500m with 41.399 in the semi-final and had broken the Olympic record already in the quarters. The Dutch Women’s Relay team achieved a new Olympic record in the final B of the Mixed Relay with 2:35.537.

"The whole competition has been like a dream to me,” Jens van ‘T Wout said. “I'm just so incredibly proud of the team we are here, the team we came to the Olympics with. We've never been this close as a team, and I think it really shows in our overall performance. I've never been happier."

The Dutch team proved in Milan how much Short Track has grown in the Netherlands. And they don’t want to stop now.

“We take away a lot of medals from these Games,” Melle van ‘T Wout commented. “We really hope that a lot of kids in the Netherlands start the sport. The long track is very popular in the Netherlands, and the short track has been growing. But we want to obviously grow more, because we all love the sport. We know how beautiful the sport is.”

Republic of Korea shines with stars and new talent

The proud Short Track team of the Republic of Korea brought home seven medals as well. Kim “Lambor-Gilli” (Women’s 1500m) and the Women’s Relay team struck gold. Choi Minjeong (Women’s 1500m), Hwang Daeheon (Men’s 1500m) and the Men’s Relay team bagged silver while Kim Gilli (Women’s 1000m) and 18-year-old youngster Rim Jongun (Men’s 1000m) picked up a bronze. Kim and Rim competed in their first Olympic Games and are the bright future of Korean Short Track.

“In fact, these Olympic Games were greater and more amazing, there was a lot of heated competition compared to other Olympics,” Choi shared. “While I was preparing I thought it would be my last Olympic Games and I thought I really wanted to give it my all.”
