He and his sister Hannah were encouraged to try ice skating by their father Dirk after they watched the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver on television. Dirk developed a backyard pond for the siblings to skate on, complete with lighting. "I was watching the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and was amazed by the passes at high speeds and the lean in the turns."
